Anti-Sag Hardware on Every Walk Gate
Walk gates (36"–60" wide) are fitted with a diagonal anti-sag cable or rod kit that prevents the heavy board construction from racking and dragging over time. We include it on all walk gates as standard - not as an upgrade.

How We Build & Install Custom Wood Gates
Gate installation is more involved than standard fence panel installation. Every gate opening requires precise measurement, dedicated gate posts with oversized footings, premium hardware installation, and careful adjustment to ensure smooth operation across all temperature conditions. Here's our gate building process from start to finish.
We measure the exact opening width, check for level and plumb on existing fence posts, and design the gate frame accordingly. For new fence + gate combos, we plan gate placement first.
Dedicated gate posts are set deeper in larger concrete footings than line posts. Walk gate posts: 42"+ depth. Drive gate posts: 54"–60" depth in 12" footing.
We build a Z-brace or L-brace internal frame from 2x4 or 2x6 cedar or PT lumber before attaching face boards. This prevents racking and ensures the gate stays square for decades.
Premium strap hinges mounted through the gate frame into solid blocking. Latch, spring, cane bolt (drive gates), and anti-sag kit installed. Gate adjusted for 1/4"–3/8" consistent gap.

Recommended Clearances
Bottom clearance (grade to gate): 2"–4" for standard yards, 4"–6" for slopes or snow-prone areas. Side clearance (gate to post): 1/4"–3/8" per side. We always build to these tolerances for smooth year-round operation.

How wide can a single walk gate be?
We build single-panel walk gates up to 60" (5 ft) wide. For anything wider, we recommend a double-leaf gate to prevent sagging from the panel weight. Single gates over 48" always include an anti-sag kit.
How wide can a double drive gate be?
We build double drive gates up to 16 ft wide. Wider than 16 ft requires additional post support or a sliding gate system. For RV access, a 14-ft double drive gate is the most common width.
Will my wood gate sag over time?
Any gate can sag over time if not properly built. We prevent sagging through Z-brace or L-brace internal framing, anti-sag kits on walk gates, oversized gate posts in large footings, and quality strap hinges.
Can you add a gate to my existing fence?
Yes - this is very common. We assess your existing post condition, determine if a new gate post is needed, and build and install a matching gate. We can match most common fence styles.
What latches do you use on drive gates?
Double drive gates include a cane bolt on one fixed panel (drops into a ground socket), a top spring latch to hold the panels together, and an interior pull rope so you can close the gate from outside the vehicle.
Do wood gates need permits?
In most cases, a gate is included in the overall fence permit. If you're adding a gate to an existing permitted fence, a separate permit is usually not required. We check your city's requirements and advise accordingly.
