Why Our Solid Board Privacy Fences Stand Out
A solid board privacy fence is only as good as the foundation it's built on. We set every post a minimum of 48 inches deep in concrete - well below Michigan's 42-inch frost line - so your fence stays perfectly plumb through freeze-thaw cycles and harsh winters. Every board is hand-selected for straightness and consistent grain before it goes on your fence.
Solid Privacy from 4 to 8 Feet
We install solid board privacy fences from 4 ft up to 8 ft. The most popular height for Metro Detroit backyards is 6 ft - tall enough for complete privacy from neighbors while staying within code limits in nearly every city.
Dog-Ear vs. Flat-Top: What's the Difference?
Dog-ear boards have two diagonal cuts at the top corners, creating the classic privacy fence silhouette. Flat-top boards are cut straight across for a clean, modern look. Both use the same construction methods - it's purely an aesthetic choice.
Cedar or Pressure-Treated: Which is Right for You?
Cedar is naturally rot-resistant and has a beautiful appearance that weathers gracefully. PT pine is less expensive and performs well when properly sealed. We recommend cedar for customers who want the highest quality product and plan to stain or seal it regularly.
Solid Board Privacy Fence Options
We offer a complete range of solid board privacy fence configurations to match any property, budget, and aesthetic preference. Every option we install uses the same deep-set concrete footings and quality lumber - the differences are in style, height, and material choice.
Our #1 seller. 6-ft Western Red Cedar dog-ear boards with cedar posts. Naturally rot-resistant and beautiful. $18–$28/linear ft.
Same cedar construction with a clean, modern flat-cut board top. Great for contemporary homes. $18–$28/linear ft.
Pressure-treated pine boards and posts for maximum value. Seal after first year for 20+ year performance. $14–$22/linear ft.
Extra-tall 8-ft option for maximum privacy, pool enclosures, or commercial-adjacent properties. Requires heavier posts.
Decorative gothic pointed-top boards add a classic, distinguished look to an otherwise standard privacy fence.
Add lattice, trellis, or a decorative cap rail to any solid board fence for additional height or visual interest.
How We Install Solid Board Privacy Fences
A solid board privacy fence demands precise installation to look and perform its best. Boards need to be level, consistently gapped, and properly nailed to rails that are level and plumb. Our crew is trained to deliver that level of precision on every project, whether it's a 50-ft backyard run or a 500-ft property border.
We measure your fence line, check grade changes, discuss height and style, and give you a written estimate with full breakdown within 24 hours.
We obtain all required city permits. Most Metro Detroit municipalities require permits for solid board privacy fences. Permit fee is separate from our labor quote.
Posts set 48"+ deep in concrete using hydraulic auger. Line posts spaced 6–8 ft apart. Corner and gate posts receive additional concrete for extra strength.
Top and bottom rails installed level between posts. Boards nailed consistently with a spacer jig for even gaps. Final inspection and walkthrough before we leave.
Solid Board Privacy Fence Specifications
Knowing the technical details of your fence helps you make the right decision and understand exactly what we're building. Below are the specifications we use on every solid board privacy fence installation in Metro Detroit. These are our minimums - we never cut corners on structural integrity.
Post Sizing by Fence Height
4-ft fences: 4x4 posts | 6-ft fences: 4x4 cedar or PT posts | 8-ft fences: 5x5 or 6x6 posts required. All posts set in a 10"–12" diameter concrete footing at 48"+ depth.
Board Sizing & Spacing
Standard boards: 1"x6" dog-ear or flat-top installed with 1/4"–3/8" gap between boards for drainage and natural wood movement. Face-nailed with 8d hot-dipped galvanized nails - 3 nails per board, per rail.
Rail Configuration
Fences up to 6 ft: 2-rail system (top and bottom). Fences 6–8 ft: 3-rail system required. Rails are 2x4 cedar or PT pine, pressure-fitted into dado-cut posts or mounted with metal rail brackets.
Frequently Asked Questions
Have questions about our solid board privacy fencing? We've compiled the most common questions from Metro Detroit homeowners below. Call us at (734) 977-0554 anytime.
What height is most common for a backyard privacy fence in Metro Detroit?
6 ft is by far the most common height for Metro Detroit backyards. Most city ordinances allow 6 ft in rear yards without a variance. Some cities allow 8 ft with a permit.
Can I get a privacy fence without a permit?
Technically no - most Metro Detroit cities require permits for any solid board fence. We always pull permits to protect you from code violations, forced removal, and issues when you sell your home.
How long will a solid board cedar fence last?
A well-built cedar privacy fence with regular staining (every 3–5 years) lasts 20–30 years in Michigan. Our installations use proper post depth and drainage to maximize longevity.
Can you build a fence on a sloped yard?
Absolutely. We offer both racked (follows the slope of the ground) and stepped (stair-stepped panels) installations depending on the grade.
What's included in your installation price?
Our price includes all labor, lumber materials, concrete, hardware, and permit filing (permit fee is additional). No hidden charges - what we quote is what you pay.
Do you guarantee your work?
Yes - 1 year workmanship warranty on all installations. We stand behind our work and are always a phone call away if you have any concerns after installation.
