BUILDING IN DETROIT
Historic Districts, Side Lots and Alleys: Fencing in Detroit
Detroit has dozens of locally designated historic districts, and a fence visible from the street there usually needs review by the city's Historic District Commission in addition to a building permit. Period-appropriate styles, typically low ornamental metal or wood picket in front and privacy in the rear, are what get approved. We prepare drawings and product details for that review. Outside historic districts, many owners have added a neighboring side lot and want to fence it in with the house as one secure yard.
Many Detroit blocks have rear alleys, so the back fence and gate face a public way and need to be solid and lockable. Fence permits are issued by the city's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED). Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; we confirm your lot's rules before quoting. For businesses, see our commercial fence installation services. Every post goes 42 inches deep in concrete.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Detroit Fence Questions
What Detroit homeowners and property owners ask us most.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Detroit?
Yes. Fence permits are issued by the city's Buildings, Safety Engineering and Environmental Department (BSEED). We draw the plot plan and file it for you.
My house is in a historic district. Can I still get a fence?
Yes, but a fence visible from the street generally needs Historic District Commission approval. Period-appropriate styles such as low ornamental metal or wood picket in front and privacy in the rear are the usual path. We prepare the submission.
Can you fence in a side lot I bought next door?
Yes. We measure both parcels and build one continuous fence so the house and side lot become a single yard, with gates where you need access.
What is the most secure residential fence?
Spear-top ornamental aluminum in front and 6-foot solid cedar or vinyl in the rear, with lockable gates and steel-stiffened gate posts, is a strong combination that still looks residential.
Do you do commercial fencing in Detroit?
Yes. We install chain link perimeters, cantilever slide gates, dumpster enclosures and equipment cages for Detroit businesses.
