BUILDING IN METRO DETROIT
One Metro Area, Very Different Fence Jobs
Metro Detroit grew outward in rings. Detroit and the inner suburbs along 8 Mile were built largely before 1960, on narrow lots with detached garages and alleys. The next ring, places like Livonia, Warren, Southfield and Taylor, filled in with ranch homes after the war. The outer suburbs, from Novi to Rochester Hills to Macomb Township, are mostly subdivisions from the 1980s on, often with HOAs. Each ring brings different lot widths, different neighbors and different approval steps.
What stays the same is the weather and the ground. Michigan frost reaches about 42 inches, and much of the region sits on heavy clay left by the old glacial lakes, which swells when wet and heaves when frozen. That is why we set every post 42 inches deep in concrete. Rules differ city by city; most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet, and we confirm your lot's rules with the building department before quoting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Metro Detroit Fence Questions
Answers that apply across the tri-county area.
How deep should fence posts be in Metro Detroit?
At least 42 inches, the Michigan frost depth. Shallower posts get pushed up by frost in clay soil, which is why so many local fences lean and gates stop latching.
Do Metro Detroit cities require fence permits?
Most do, through each city or township building department. Rules on height, setbacks and corner lots vary, and we confirm and file them for your address.
What is the most popular fence in Metro Detroit?
Six-foot privacy fencing in cedar or vinyl. Vinyl leads in newer HOA subdivisions; cedar is still the most common in older neighborhoods.
How much does a fence cost in Metro Detroit?
It depends on material, height, footage, gates and removal. Our fence cost guide lists typical ranges, and our free on-site measure gives you an exact itemized price.
When is the best time to install a fence?
Any season works, but spring books up first. Getting the measure and approvals done in late winter puts you near the front of the schedule.
