LAKE TOWN MATERIALS
What to Build Between Your House and the Lake
On a lake lot the fence has two jobs: open on the water side, private along the neighbors. These four materials cover both.
Water Side
Ornamental Aluminum
Black Powder-Coat Picket
Keeps kids and dogs off the shoreline without blocking the water. Rust-proof and the standard choice for pool and dock-side barriers.
Heights:
3ft to 5ft
Finish:
Black or bronze
Gates:
Self-closing option
Best For:
Lake views
No rust near the water
Neighbor Lines
Vinyl Privacy Fencing
Virgin PVC, Reinforced Rails
Lake lots sit close together. A 6-foot vinyl privacy run along the side lines gives you a private patio and shrugs off lake-air moisture.
Heights:
5ft to 6ft
Colors:
White, Tan, Woodgrain
Rails:
Aluminum reinforced
Best For:
Side-yard privacy
Never needs staining
Cottage Style
Cedar Wood Fencing
Picket, Shadowbox, Horizontal
Cedar picket suits the older cottage homes; horizontal cedar fits the rebuilt and modern houses going up on lake lots.
Heights:
3ft to 6ft
Wood:
Western Red Cedar
Styles:
Picket, Horizontal
Best For:
Cottages, remodels
Naturally rot resistant
Budget & Pets
Chain Link Fencing
Black Vinyl-Coated
Black-coated chain link nearly disappears against trees and water, and it is the lowest-cost way to fence a dog run on an inland lot.
Heights:
4ft to 5ft
Finish:
Black or galvanized
Gates:
Walk and drive
Best For:
Dogs, budgets
Coated against moisture

BUILDING A FENCE IN WALLED LAKE
Lake Lots Need a Different Fence Plan
Many Walled Lake homes started as summer cottages, so lots are narrow, side yards are tight and property lines are not always where an old fence suggests. On lake-side lots the ground often slopes toward the water and stays soft, which is where frost heave and leaning posts start. We set every post 42 inches deep in concrete and step or rack panels to the grade instead of leaving gaps under the fence.
Waterfront lots can also carry shoreline, easement or view rules beyond a normal backyard. Fences are reviewed by the city building department, and most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; on a lake lot the 'front' may be the water side, so we confirm your lot's rules before quoting. If the line is uncertain, a survey first saves trouble. More nearby cities on our Oakland County page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Walled Lake Fence Questions
Answers for lake-side and inland lots.
Can I put a fence on my Walled Lake waterfront?
Often yes, but waterfront fences usually have tighter height and placement limits to protect views. We check your lot with the city before quoting and typically recommend open aluminum on the water side.
My lot is narrow. Will a fence still work?
Yes. We plan post spacing and gate swings around driveways, AC units and the house so you keep access to both sides of the home.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Walled Lake?
Yes, plan on a permit through the city building department. We file it with a plot plan for you.
How do you keep fence posts from leaning on soft lake soil?
Every post goes 42 inches deep in concrete, below the frost line. Gate posts are steel-stiffened, and vinyl bottom rails get aluminum inserts.
Do you handle pool fences in Walled Lake?
Yes. Aluminum pool barriers with self-closing, self-latching gates are one of our most common lake-area projects.
