Fence Installation in Grosse Pointe, MI

The City of Grosse Pointe is the compact center of the Pointes, built around the Village shops on Kercheval and lined with Colonial, Tudor and Georgian homes on lots that run toward Lake St. Clair. We build fences that respect that architecture and fit narrow side yards between substantial houses.

MATERIALS THAT SUIT THE ARCHITECTURE

Fences Designed to Look Right Beside a Grosse Pointe Home

Here the fence is part of the facade. These are the four materials we build most in the City of Grosse Pointe; open any card for full styles.

Wrought-Iron Look

Ornamental Aluminum

Replaces Old Iron Fencing

Many homes here have aging wrought iron that is rusting at the base. Heavy-profile aluminum with finials and decorative rings gives the same period look with no rust or repainting.

Heights:

3ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black, bronze

Details:

Finials, rings, arches

Best For:

Front yards, gardens

Iron look without the rust

Painted Cedar Picket & Privacy

Built to Match the Trim

Cedar picket and board-on-board privacy can be painted to match window trim, with lattice or cap-and-trim tops that suit a Colonial or Tudor better than a plain dog-ear.

Heights:

3ft to 6ft

Wood:

Western Red Cedar

Tops:

Lattice, cap-and-trim

Best For:

Period homes

Paint- or stain-ready

No Repainting

Vinyl Privacy Fencing

White or Woodgrain PVC

For owners who want the crisp white look without repainting a wood fence every few years, vinyl with a decorative top holds its finish beside a painted brick or clapboard home.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Colors:

White, Woodgrain

Tops:

Lattice, spindle

Best For:

Backyard privacy

Color molded through

Black Chain Link

Hidden in Landscaping

Black vinyl-coated chain link set inside a hedge row or along a rear line keeps a dog contained while the plantings do the visual work.

Heights:

4ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black vinyl-coated

BUILDING IN GROSSE POINTE

Respecting the Streetscape Without Giving Up Privacy

The City of Grosse Pointe takes the look of its streets seriously, and front-yard and corner-lot fences draw the most scrutiny. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet, and the Pointes are often stricter on style and placement; we confirm your lot's rules with the city before quoting. In practice that means low, open ornamental fences toward the street and taller privacy only behind the front line of the house.

Side yards between large older homes can be tight, with foundations, window wells, gas meters and mature hedges along the line. We hand-dig where an auger will not fit, set every post 42 inches deep in concrete below the frost line, and protect lawns and plantings with ground mats during the build. When old iron or wood comes out, we remove the buried footings too. Compare decorative profiles on our aluminum fencing page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Grosse Pointe Fence Questions

Answers for homeowners in the City of Grosse Pointe.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Grosse Pointe?

Yes, fence projects in the City of Grosse Pointe go through the city, and front and corner-lot fences get close review. We prepare the drawings and file for you.

Can I put a privacy fence in my front yard?

Generally not at full privacy height. Front-yard fences across Metro Detroit are usually limited to about 3-4 feet, and Grosse Pointe favors open, decorative styles. We confirm your lot's rules first.

Can you replace an old wrought iron fence?

Yes. Heavy-profile aluminum with finials and rings replicates the period look and will not rust. We remove the old iron and its footings as part of the job.

Is the City of Grosse Pointe different from the other Pointes?

Yes. Grosse Pointe, Grosse Pointe Park, Farms, Woods and Shores are separate cities with their own building departments and rules. We file with the one your home is in.
