WAYNE COUNTY COMMUNITIES
Where We Build Fences in Wayne County
These are the Wayne County cities we work in most. Each page covers the lots, housing and fence styles we see there. We also serve the rest of the county, including Inkster, Romulus, Hamtramck and the Downriver cities.
Detroit
Bungalows, brick two-flats and historic districts where alleys, tight side yards and vacant-lot boundaries shape the job.
Dearborn
Brick bungalows and colonials on narrow lots near the Rouge River, where privacy fences go up close to neighbors.
Livonia
Large stock of 1950s and 1960s ranches on wider lots, ideal for 6ft cedar or vinyl privacy and dog yards.
Westland
Ranch and colonial neighborhoods where chain link replacements and vinyl privacy upgrades are frequent requests.
Grosse Pointe
Older, larger homes on Lake St. Clair where ornamental aluminum and refined cedar suit the architecture.
Northville
A historic downtown with Victorian homes plus newer subdivisions; picket fronts and HOA-approved privacy both common.
Plymouth
Walkable older neighborhoods around Kellogg Park where classic wood picket fences fit the streetscape.
Dearborn Heights
Postwar brick homes split by the Rouge River parklands, with steady demand for privacy and pet fences.
Taylor
Downriver ranch lots where vinyl privacy and black chain link are the most popular builds.
Wyandotte
Detroit River town with older homes on compact lots, from riverfront aluminum to backyard cedar.
Allen Park
Tidy brick bungalow streets just south of Dearborn where vinyl privacy replacements are common.
Garden City
Small lots with detached garages, where efficient privacy fencing makes the most of a compact backyard.

LOCAL CONSIDERATIONS
Why Wayne County Fences Need a Site-by-Site Plan
Wayne County has the oldest housing stock in the metro area. In Detroit, Dearborn, Hamtramck and the inner Downriver cities, lots are often 30 to 40 feet wide with detached garages and alleys, so the fence line has to work around existing structures and a neighbor's fence that may already sit on the line. Out west in Livonia, Westland, Northville and Plymouth, lots get wider and newer subdivisions bring HOA rules.
Each city runs its own building department and fence rules. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet and allow taller privacy fences in the rear; we confirm your lot's rules before quoting. Historic districts in Detroit and some suburbs add design review. Much of the county sits on heavy clay that heaves in winter, and near the Detroit River and Lake St. Clair the water table is high, so our 42-inch concrete footings matter even more here.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Wayne County Fence Questions
Answers for Detroit, the western suburbs and Downriver.
Do I need a fence permit in Wayne County?
Almost every city in Wayne County requires one, issued by the local building department rather than the county. We confirm the requirement for your address and file it for you.
Can you build a fence on an alley or next to a garage?
Yes. That is everyday work in Detroit, Dearborn and the inner-ring suburbs. We tie into garage corners, set gates for alley access and keep the line inside your property.
What if my neighbor already has a fence on the line?
We measure from your survey or property pins and set the new fence on your side, or work with both owners if you want to share one fence. We never attach to a neighbor's fence without permission.
Do you build in Detroit's historic districts?
Yes. We build wood picket and ornamental aluminum fences suited to older homes and can provide drawings for historic district review.
How long does a Wayne County fence take?
The build is usually one to three days. Permits typically take one to three weeks, depending on the city and whether an HOA or historic review is involved.
