AFTER THE STORM
What to Do in the First 48 Hours
A few steps right after the storm protect your family, your claim and the parts of the fence that can be saved.
Stay Clear of Lines
If a tree or limb is touching a power line, stay away and call DTE or your utility. Fence work waits until the line is cleared.
Safety before anything
Photograph Everything
Take wide and close photos of every damaged section, the tree or debris that caused it, and the undamaged fence for comparison, before anything is moved.
Before cleanup starts
Secure the Opening
If pets or a pool are involved, the gap has to close now. We can install a temporary panel or construction fence until the permanent repair.

REPAIR OR REPLACE
How Storm Damage Spreads Beyond What You See
Wind does not just knock down the panels that fell. A solid privacy fence acts like a sail, and a hard gust levers every post in the run. The section on the ground is obvious; the posts next to it may now be cracked at the footing or lifted in wet clay and will lean by fall. We check the whole run, not just the gap. Fallen trees add crushing damage: bent rails, split posts and pushed footings several sections away from the impact.
We repair when the damage is confined and the rest of the fence is sound, matching boards, pickets or vinyl panels as closely as the product allows. When a large share of the run is damaged, or matching parts are no longer made, rebuilding the run may be the better use of your claim. We do not cut down standing trees; a tree service handles the trunk and we clear the fence debris. Related: leaning post replacement, vinyl fence repair, and the main fence repair page.

DAMAGE TYPES
Storm Damage We Repair
Every kind of weather damage we see across Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.
Wind-Blown Privacy Runs
Whole sections pushed over at the footings. We reset or replace posts and rebuild the panels, not just stand them back up.
Fallen Trees and Limbs
Crushed rails, split posts and bent sections. We rebuild once the tree service has removed the trunk.
Uprooted Root Plates
When a tree tips over, its roots can lift the fence footings beside it. We re-dig and set new footings.
Ice and Snow Load
Heavy ice on mesh, lattice and chain link privacy slats can bend rails and pull posts. We repair and advise on winter care.
Flood and Washout
Saturated ground lets posts lean or float. We reset in fresh footings and add drainage where it helps.
Wind-Resistant Upgrades
When rebuilding, a shadowbox style lets some wind pass while keeping privacy.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Storm Damage Fence Questions
What to expect on cost, insurance and timing.
Does homeowners insurance cover fence storm damage?
Many policies cover fences damaged by wind or a fallen tree, often under other structures coverage, subject to your deductible. Coverage varies, so check your policy and photograph the damage before cleanup. We provide an itemized estimate for your adjuster.
How much does storm damage fence repair cost?
Single-section repairs commonly land between about $250 and $900 depending on material and how many posts are affected. Larger damage is quoted on site. Your written estimate itemizes every part.
Who removes the tree that fell on my fence?
A tree service removes the trunk and large limbs. We clear fence debris and rebuild once the tree is off the fence. If the tree came from a neighbor's yard, both insurers may be involved.
Can you match my existing fence?
Usually. Cedar boards and common vinyl and aluminum styles are easy to match. Discontinued vinyl colors or older custom styles may not match exactly, and we tell you before work starts.
How fast can you repair storm damage?
Temporary securing for pools and pets is the priority right after a storm. Permanent repairs are scheduled as materials arrive, typically within a few weeks after widespread storms.
Why did my fence blow over when the neighbor's did not?
Usually post depth and condition. Fences with posts at the 42-inch frost line in sound concrete hold far better than shallow or rotted posts.
