WATERFRONT-READY MATERIALS

Fence Materials That Stand Up to Canal Living

Moisture, wind off the river and ice all test a fence in Gibraltar. These four materials hold up; open any card for full styles and specs.

Canal-Side Favorite

Ornamental Aluminum

Keeps the Water View

Powder-coated aluminum will not rust next to the water and leaves the view of the canal open. With self-closing gates it keeps kids and pets back from the seawall.

Heights:

3ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black, bronze, white

Gates:

Self-closing option

Best For:

Seawalls, views

Zero rust near the water

Moisture-Proof Privacy

Vinyl Privacy Fencing

Virgin PVC, Reinforced Rails

Vinyl cannot rot in damp ground and rinses clean of algae and river grime. Reinforced rails and deep posts handle the open wind that comes across the water.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Colors:

White, Tan, Woodgrain

Rail:

Aluminum reinforced

Best For:

Street-side privacy

Will not rot or peel

Natural Look

Cedar Wood Fencing

Naturally Rot-Resistant

Western Red Cedar resists rot better than pine in wet yards and suits cottage-style homes on the islands. We keep the boards up off the soil so they dry between rains.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Wood:

Western Red Cedar

Styles:

Shadowbox, picket

Best For:

Cottage homes

Boards kept off wet soil

Practical Security

Vinyl-Coated Chain Link

Coated for Corrosion

Black vinyl-coated chain link adds a protective layer over the galvanizing, which helps in a damp waterfront setting, and secures a dog yard for less.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Finish:

Black vinyl-coated

Gates:

Walk and drive

Best For:

Dog yards, side lots

Extra corrosion protection

BUILDING IN GIBRALTAR

Setting Posts Near Seawalls and in Wet Ground

Building a fence on a canal lot is different from building one inland. The water table is high, the soil can be soft fill, and the ground stays wet for long stretches. We still set every post 42 inches deep, below the frost line, but we use wider concrete footings in soft ground, pump standing water from holes before pouring, and keep posts back from seawalls so the footing does not load the wall or interfere with its tiebacks.

Waterfront lots also bring view questions. Neighbors along a canal share sightlines to the water, so most Gibraltar owners keep the water side low and open with aluminum and put the taller privacy on the street or side yards. Some lots sit in a floodplain, which can affect what is allowed. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; we confirm your lot's rules with the city building department before quoting. Start with aluminum fencing for the water side.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Gibraltar Fence Questions

What canal and island homeowners ask us.

Can you build a fence next to my seawall?

Yes, but we keep posts set back from the wall so the footing does not load it or hit tiebacks. We look at your seawall during the measure and set the line accordingly.

What fence material lasts best on the water?

Powder-coated aluminum and vinyl last longest because neither rusts nor rots. Cedar holds up well if boards are kept off the soil. Plain galvanized steel is the least suited to constant moisture.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Gibraltar?

Most fence projects need a permit from the Gibraltar building department, and floodplain lots can have added review. We handle the paperwork for you.

Will a fence block my neighbor's view of the canal?

A tall solid fence can. That is why most Gibraltar homeowners use low aluminum on the water side and keep privacy fencing toward the street.
