WHY GALVANIZED CHAIN LINK
The Hardest-Working Fence Per Dollar
Galvanized chain link will not win a beauty contest, but for backyards, dog runs, rentals and side lots it does more for the money than anything else we install.
Zinc Stops the Rust
Wire and pipe are coated in zinc that corrodes in place of the steel, so the fence keeps protecting itself even where it gets scratched.
Decades in Michigan weather
Lowest Cost Per Foot
Material and labor cost less than wood, vinyl or aluminum, which makes it the go-to for long runs and large lots.
Long runs, smaller budget
Nothing to Paint or Seal
No staining, no boards to replace and no rails to rot. A yearly walk to check tension and fittings is the whole maintenance plan.
Zero annual upkeep
Easy to Repair in Sections
A bent post or damaged mesh panel can be cut out and replaced without rebuilding the run, which keeps repair costs low.
Fix one bay, not all
BUILD SPECIFICATION
Gauge, Mesh and Posts: What Actually Makes Chain Link Last
Chain link fails at the posts and the fittings long before the wire wears out. Budget installs set thin line posts 18 to 24 inches deep, skip the bottom tension wire and leave the mesh loose. Frost then lifts the posts, the top rail kinks and the bottom curls up where dogs push under. We set terminal posts in concrete below the 42 inch frost line, stretch the fabric tight between them and add a bottom tension wire on every run.
For most homes we use 11-gauge or heavier 9-gauge mesh with a 2 inch diamond. If you want color, see our black, green and brown vinyl-coated chain link. For warehouses, lots and HOA common areas, our commercial perimeter fencing steps up to heavier pipe and taller heights. Every option is covered on our chain link fencing hub.

HEIGHTS & OPTIONS
Galvanized Chain Link Options
Pick the height for the job, then add the pieces that make it work for your yard.
4 ft Yard Fence
The standard backyard and front-yard height. Keeps most dogs in and meets typical front-setback limits.
5 ft and 6 ft
Taller runs for bigger dogs, rear lot lines along busy roads and properties that need a firmer boundary.
Dog Runs & Kennels
Enclosed runs with a gate and heavier mesh, sized to the dog and the space. See our dog fencing options.
Privacy Slats
Slats woven into the mesh block most sightlines while keeping chain link pricing. Read about privacy fabric for chain link.
Walk & Drive Gates
Single walk gates, double drive gates for trailers and mowers, with welded frames and lockable latches.
Knuckled Top Edge
Folded-over wire ends at the top instead of sharp twisted points. Safer where kids and pets are around the fence.
Commercial-Grade Posts
Heavier terminal and gate posts on residential runs for big dogs, trailers and gates that see daily use.
Old Fence Removal
We pull the old fence and footings and haul everything away before the new line goes in.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Galvanized Chain Link Questions
Cost, gauge and how long it lasts.
How much does galvanized chain link fence cost in Metro Detroit?
Most 4-foot residential galvanized chain link projects land roughly between $18 and $32 per linear foot installed. Height, gauge, gates, grade and old fence removal move the price. You get an exact itemized quote after the free measure.
What gauge chain link should I get?
For most homes 11-gauge is a solid choice, and 9-gauge is heavier and stiffer for big dogs and heavy use. Thin 12.5-gauge mesh sold in big-box kits dents easily and is not something we recommend for a permanent fence.
How long does galvanized chain link last?
A well-installed galvanized fence commonly lasts 20 years or more in Michigan. The coating wears slowest on heavier wire, and posts set below the frost line keep the fence from loosening.
Galvanized or black vinyl-coated: which should I choose?
Galvanized costs less and lasts a long time. Vinyl-coated adds a second layer of protection and a color that disappears into landscaping. If the fence faces the street, many homeowners pay the difference for black.
Do I need a permit for a chain link fence?
Most cities and townships in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties require one, and front-yard heights are limited. We check your rules, draw the plot plan and file it for you.
Can you install chain link on a sloped yard?
Yes. Chain link follows grade better than almost any other fence because the mesh flexes to the slope. On steep sections we step the top rail or add fabric at the bottom so pets cannot slip under.
