Fence Installation in Northville, MI
Northville’s Victorian-era downtown, hilly streets and wooded ravines along the Rouge make it one of the most distinctive towns we work in. A fence here has to respect older homes, follow real grade changes and still keep the dog in.

Fences That Suit Northville’s Older Homes and Newer Subdivisions

GRADE, TREES AND HISTORY
Why Northville Fences Take More Planning Than Most
Few Metro Detroit towns have Northville’s grade changes. On a slope, a fence either steps down in level sections or racks to follow the ground. Wood and vinyl privacy usually step, which leaves triangular gaps we fill or close at the bottom for dogs; aluminum racks smoothly. Mature trees and roots are everywhere, so we hand-dig near them and adjust post spacing to avoid major roots. Every post still goes 42 inches deep in concrete.
Northville has a downtown historic district, and properties inside it may need design review before an exterior change like a fence. We check whether your address is affected and what the city building department requires. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3–4 feet; we confirm your lot’s rules before quoting. Outside the city in Northville Township subdivisions, HOA approval is usually the main step.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Northville Fence Questions
Answers for hills, trees and historic homes.
Do I need a permit for a fence in Northville?
Generally yes. Inside the city, the city building department issues fence permits, and homes in the historic district may need design review. In Northville Township, the township handles it. We confirm and file either way.
How do you build a fence on a steep yard?
We either step level panels down the hill or rack panels to follow the slope. Aluminum racks cleanly; wood and vinyl usually step, and we close the gaps at the bottom so pets cannot slip under.
What fence looks right on a Victorian or older Northville home?
Cedar picket in front, painted or natural, with matching gates. Black ornamental aluminum is another period-appropriate option that never needs repainting.
Will you damage my trees?
We hand-dig near trees and shift post locations to avoid major roots. We will tell you at the measure if a tree affects the fence line.
