Dog Fencing in Metro Detroit

Dogs get out in three ways: over, under and through. We size the height for your dog, close the gaps at the bottom and between pickets, and hang gates that close and latch on their own, so the fence holds the dog you actually have.

HOW DOGS ESCAPE

Build Against the Way Your Dog Gets Out

Tell us how your dog has escaped before, or how you think it would. Each problem has a specific fix.

Jumpers and Climbers

Most large breeds stay in behind 5 feet. Athletic jumpers and climbers need 6 feet with no horizontal rails on the yard side to use as a ladder.

Rails on the outside

Diggers

We keep the bottom of the fence tight to grade and can add buried wire mesh or a concrete mow strip along the base where a dog likes to dig.

Dig guard along the line

Squeezers

Small dogs slip through 3-inch gaps. Puppy-picket aluminum, tighter picket spacing or solid styles close the openings.

Gaps under 2 inches

Gate Dashers

Most escapes happen at a gate someone left open. Self-closing hinges and gravity or magnetic latches make it shut on its own.

BEST FENCES FOR DOGS

Four Fence Types That Work Well for Dogs

Each one fits a different dog and a different yard. Open any of them for heights, colors and price ranges.

Barkers & Reactive Dogs

Vinyl Privacy Fence

Solid Tongue-and-Groove

No sightlines means fewer triggers from passing dogs, squirrels and delivery drivers. Smooth faces give climbers nothing to grip.

Heights:

5ft or 6ft

Gaps:

None

Climb Risk:

Very low

Best For:

Reactive or barking dogs

Aluminum-reinforced bottom rail

Natural Look

Wood Privacy Fence

Dog-Ear, Flat-Top, Shadowbox

Solid screening at a lower price than vinyl. We put the rails on the outside face where possible so climbers do not get a foothold.

Heights:

5ft or 6ft

Gaps:

None to minimal

Climb Risk:

Low, rails outside

Best For:

Big dogs, budget privacy

Bottom board kept tight to grade

Small Breeds

Aluminum with Puppy Pickets

Open View, Tight Bottom

Extra pickets in the lower section close the gaps where small dogs squeeze through, while the upper fence keeps the view open.

Heights:

4ft or 5ft

Bottom Gaps:

Tightened

Climb Risk:

Low

Best For:

Small dogs, front yards

Powder-coated, never rusts

Dog Runs & Big Yards

Vinyl-Coated Chain Link

Black, Green or Brown

The most economical way to fence a large yard or build a dedicated dog run, with bottom tension wire to stop pushing under.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Mesh:

2″ diamond

Climb Risk:

Moderate

Best For:

Dog runs, large lots

Lowest cost per foot

HEIGHT AND GAPS

How Tall Should a Dog Fence Be?

For most dogs, 4 feet works for small breeds, 5 feet for medium and large dogs, and 6 feet for strong jumpers, climbers and anything that has cleared a 5-foot fence before. Height is only half of it. A dog that can get a paw on a horizontal rail can climb a fence it could never jump, so on the yard side we prefer smooth faces or vertical pickets. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3 to 4 feet, which is why dog areas usually live in the back yard.

Underground electronic fences are popular for their price, but they do not keep other animals or people out, and a determined dog will run through the correction. A physical fence handles both directions. If you are weighing the two, our underground fence cost guide lays out the trade-offs honestly. For a cheaper physical option, see privacy fabric for chain link, which also cuts down on fence-line barking.

HOW A DOG FENCE PROJECT RUNS

From Escape Report to Secure Yard

Most dog fences are built in one to three days once permits clear. Keep the dog inside on build days, since the line is open while we work.

01

Step 1

Meet the Dog, Measure the Yard

We ask how the dog gets out, check grade along the line for gaps under the fence and mark gate locations around how you actually walk the dog.

Gate swing planned

PAPERWORK MANAGED

02

Step 2

Permits & Utility Marks

We file the permit and HOA packet, then call Miss Dig 811 so utilities are marked. Buried dog-fence wires are not marked, so tell us if you have one.

03

Step 3

Build, Seal the Gaps, Test the Gates

Posts go in at 42 inches, bottom gaps are closed to grade, dig guards go in where needed, and every gate is tested to close and latch on its own.

DOG FENCE DETAILS

Small Details That Keep Dogs In

These are the add-ons and design choices that separate a dog fence from a regular fence.

Dig Guard Mesh

Galvanized welded wire buried along the base of the fence where diggers work, attached to the bottom rail.

Self-Closing Hinges

Spring or adjustable hinges that pull the gate shut every time, paired with a latch that catches on its own.

Lockable Latches

A padlock-ready latch stops kids, guests and meter readers from leaving a gate open by mistake.

Dedicated Dog Runs

A chain link or wood run off the back door gives the dog a contained bathroom area without fencing the whole lot.

Gravel or Pavers at Gates

A hard surface under the gate keeps dogs from digging out at the most-used spot on the fence.

Stepped vs. Racked Panels

On slopes, racked panels follow the ground and leave no triangle gaps at the bottom that a small dog could slip through.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Dog Fencing Questions

What dog owners ask us most.

What is the best fence for dogs?

For most dogs, a 5 to 6-foot solid privacy fence in vinyl or wood is the most escape-proof, because it blocks sightlines and has nothing to climb. Coated chain link is the best value for large yards and dog runs.

Is a 4-foot fence high enough for a dog?

For small and many medium dogs, yes. Large breeds and known jumpers usually need 5 to 6 feet. If your dog has cleared a 4-foot fence before, plan on 6.

How do I stop my dog from digging under the fence?

Keep the bottom of the fence tight to grade and add a dig guard of buried welded wire or a concrete mow strip along the base where the dog digs.

Do you install invisible dog fences?

We build physical fences. If you have an existing buried dog-fence wire, let us know before we dig so we can work around it or plan to remove it.

Can you fence just part of the yard for the dog?

Yes. A dedicated dog run or a partial fence off the back door is often the most affordable option and keeps the rest of the yard open.
