Long, Narrow Lots

Fence Installation in Garden City, MI

Garden City was laid out with long lots meant for backyard gardens, and that shape still defines it: small ranches and bungalows on either side of Ford Road between Merriman and Inkster Road, with deep backyards behind them. We build fences that run those long side lines straight and keep gardens, pets and kids in.

MATERIALS FOR DEEP LOTS

Fence Options for Garden City's Long Backyards

A Garden City lot can need twice as much side-line fence as back-line fence. These materials handle that shape well; open any card for full specs.

Most Popular

Wood Privacy Fencing

Treated Pine & Cedar

Pine dog-ear privacy keeps the cost of long side lines in check, and cedar is the upgrade where the fence faces the patio. Both are easy to fit around sheds and garden beds.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Wood:

Treated pine, cedar

Styles:

Dog-ear, shadowbox

Best For:

Long side lines

Best value per foot of privacy

Low Maintenance

Vinyl Privacy & Picket

Virgin PVC Panels

Vinyl keeps a long run looking uniform for decades. Many owners mix 6-foot privacy near the house with 4-foot picket around the garden at the back.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Colors:

White, Tan, Woodgrain

Rail:

Aluminum reinforced

Best For:

No-stain privacy

Straight lines that stay straight

Gardens & Dogs

Chain Link Fencing

Galvanized or Black Coated

Chain link lets sun reach vegetable beds and keeps rabbits and dogs where they belong. It is the most economical way to fence the deep back half of a long lot.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Finish:

Galvanized, black

Add-On:

Bottom tension wire

Best For:

Gardens, pets

Keeps the sunlight in

Front Yards

Ornamental Aluminum

Black 3ft to 4ft Picket

A short aluminum fence across the front of a small ranch adds curb appeal and a safe play area without blocking the view of the street.

Heights:

3ft to 4ft

Finish:

Black powder coat

Gates:

Matching walk gate

Best For:

Front yards

Never needs paint

BUILDING IN GARDEN CITY

Getting a Straight Line Down a Long Garden City Side Yard

The long, narrow lot is Garden City's signature. A fence that may run 100 feet or more down each side shows every flaw: a post a little out of line, a rail that dips, a section that heaved. We pull a string line from the front post to the back corner, set every post 42 inches deep in concrete below the frost line, and check the top line as we go so the finished fence reads straight from the back door.

Deep lots also mean choices. Many owners fence only the back half, run privacy along the patio and switch to chain link or picket around a garden, or add a second gate near the back for mowers and wheelbarrows. Old garden fencing, clothesline poles and tree roots often turn up along the line. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; we confirm your lot's rules with the city building department before quoting. Pricing guidance is on our wood fencing page.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Garden City Fence Questions

What Garden City homeowners ask before they fence.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Garden City?

Most fence projects need a permit from the Garden City building department. We prepare the plot plan and file it as part of the job.

Do I have to fence my whole lot?

No. Many Garden City owners fence only the back portion or close in the patio area. We can tie the fence into the house or garage and stop it wherever makes sense.

Can I mix fence materials on one lot?

Yes. Privacy near the house and chain link or picket around a garden at the back is a common, cost-effective combination on long lots.

How much does it cost to fence a deep Garden City lot?

Long side lines add up, so material choice matters most. Chain link and treated pine are the most economical; vinyl and cedar cost more per foot. We give an exact itemized number after a free measure.
