LAKEFRONT FENCE MATERIALS

Fencing That Handles Lake St. Clair Weather

Open water means wind, spray and ice. These materials are what we trust on Shores properties; open any card for full specs.

Lakefront Standard

Ornamental Aluminum

Open Views, Pool-Code Gates

Wind passes straight through aluminum pickets, so it puts far less load on posts than a solid fence, and it keeps the lake view open from the house. Powder coat will not rust in the spray.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Finish:

Black, bronze

Gates:

Self-closing, latching

Best For:

Lakefront, pools

Low wind load, no rust

Street-Side Privacy

Cedar Privacy Fencing

Board-on-Board, Cap-and-Trim

Cedar board-on-board screens side yards and service areas away from the water, with a finished face on both sides and a trim cap that suits estate architecture.

Heights:

5ft to 6ft

Wood:

Western Red Cedar

Tops:

Cap-and-trim

Best For:

Side yards, terraces

Finished face both sides

Zero Maintenance

Vinyl Privacy Fencing

Wind-Rated Installation

Vinyl will not rot or peel in lake humidity. On exposed lots we shorten spans, reinforce rails and set posts deep so solid panels stand up to gusts off the water.

Heights:

5ft to 6ft

Colors:

White, Tan, Woodgrain

Rail:

Aluminum reinforced

Best For:

Low-upkeep privacy

Reinforced for exposure

Discreet Containment

Black Chain Link

Inside Hedges & Plantings

Black coated chain link tucked inside a hedge or tree line keeps dogs on a large property without adding a visible line to the landscape.

Heights:

4ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black vinyl-coated

Use:

Inside plantings

Best For:

Large dog areas

Hidden in the landscape

BUILDING IN GROSSE POINTE SHORES

Wind Load, Water Views and Lakefront Rules

A lakefront lot in the Shores sees wind that inland fences never do. A 6-foot solid fence acts like a sail, so on exposed sides we favor open aluminum, shorten spans on solid panels, and set every post 42 inches deep in concrete below the frost line with heavier footings at corners and gates. Ground near the water can be soft and wet, so we size footings to the soil we find, not a standard hole.

Views matter as much as wind. Neighbors along the lake share sightlines to the water, and the city reviews fence placement closely, especially toward the lake and the street. The Shores also straddles the Wayne and Macomb county line, but permits run through the city itself. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; we confirm your lot's rules with the city before quoting. Pool owners can start at aluminum fencing.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Grosse Pointe Shores Fence FAQ

What lakefront homeowners ask us.

Do I need a permit for a fence in Grosse Pointe Shores?

Yes. Fence projects go through the City of Grosse Pointe Shores, and placement toward the lake and street is reviewed closely. We prepare drawings and file for you.

What fence holds up best to wind off the lake?

Ornamental aluminum, because wind passes through it. Solid privacy fences can work on exposed lots with deeper posts, shorter spans and reinforced rails.

Can I fence the lake side of my property?

Often yes, but height, style and placement are usually limited to protect views. Low aluminum is the typical lakeside choice. We confirm the rules for your lot before quoting.

Is Grosse Pointe Shores in Wayne or Macomb County?

Both. The city straddles the county line, but fence permits are handled by the city itself, so the process is the same either way.
