Fence Installation in South Lyon, MI

South Lyon mixes a small historic downtown along Lafayette and Pontiac Trail with newer subdivisions and open land at the edges of town. We fence brand-new backyards for HOA approval, older in-town lots, and larger parcels where split rail or a long dog fence makes more sense.

FENCES FOR SOUTH LYON LOTS

Matching the Fence to a New Subdivision or an Open Lot

A fresh subdivision yard and a lot backing onto fields need different fences. Here is how the four systems we build fit South Lyon.

New Subdivisions

Vinyl Fencing

Privacy & Semi-Privacy PVC

The fence most South Lyon associations approve. Tan or white vinyl around a new patio keeps the subdivision look uniform and needs no upkeep.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Colors:

White, Tan, Khaki

Rails:

Aluminum reinforced

Best For:

HOA yards

HOA spec sheet included

Rural Edge

Wood & Split Rail

Cedar Privacy, Post-and-Rail

Split rail marks a large lot line without closing it in, and it can be lined with wire for dogs. Cedar privacy suits older in-town homes.

Heights:

3ft to 6ft

Wood:

Cedar or treated pine

Styles:

Split rail, Privacy

Best For:

Acreage, older homes

Wire mesh liner available

Ornamental Aluminum

Rackable Black Panels

Keeps views to ponds and open land intact, follows rolling ground, and is the standard choice for pools in newer South Lyon neighborhoods.

Heights:

4ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black or bronze

Panels:

Rackable on slopes

Best For:

Pools, views

Pool-code gate hardware

Big Dog Yards

Chain Link Fencing

Black Vinyl-Coated

On a large parcel, black chain link is the most economical way to give dogs a big, secure run.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Finish:

Black or galvanized

BUILDING IN SOUTH LYON

New-Construction Soil, HOA Rules and Long Lot Lines

A lot of South Lyon fencing happens in subdivisions built in the last few decades, and new-construction yards have their own quirks. Builders often regrade with fill over clay, so the top few feet can be loose while the ground below stays wet. Posts set shallow in that fill lean within a couple of winters. We go 42 inches deep in concrete, below the frost line, and we confirm grade stakes and drainage swales so the fence does not dam water between houses.

Most of those subdivisions also have associations that control style and color, so we prepare the HOA packet along with the permit. Outside the subdivisions, lots get bigger and the job shifts to long runs, split rail and drive gates for trailers. South Lyon and the surrounding township have their own offices, and we confirm which one covers your address. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; we confirm your lot's rules before quoting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

South Lyon Fence Questions

For in-town, subdivision and larger-lot homeowners.

Do I need a permit for a fence in South Lyon?

Plan on one. Depending on your address you may be in the City of South Lyon or the surrounding township, which have separate offices. We confirm which applies and file it for you.

My new subdivision has an HOA. Will they allow a privacy fence?

Many allow vinyl or wood privacy in specific colors and locations, while some require open fencing like aluminum. We read your restrictions and submit a packet that matches them.

Why do fences lean in new-construction yards?

Builder fill over clay holds water and heaves. Posts set at 24 to 30 inches move. Ours go 42 inches deep in concrete, below the frost line.

Can split rail keep my dog in?

On its own, no. Lined with welded wire mesh on the inside, yes, and it keeps the open rural look on a larger lot.

How much does a fence cost in South Lyon?

Most residential projects land between about $25 and $55 per linear foot installed. Split rail and chain link are at the low end, vinyl and aluminum higher. The free measure gives you an exact total.
