Lake & Canal Lots

Fence Installation in St. Clair Shores, MI

St. Clair Shores stretches along Lake St. Clair, with canal homes east of Jefferson and tidy postwar brick ranches inland toward Harper and I-94. We build fences for both: open aluminum that keeps the water view on canal lots, and privacy fences for the close-set inland streets.

LAKESIDE & INLAND MATERIALS

Choosing a Fence That Survives Lake St. Clair Weather

Wind off the lake, wet ground and winter spray are tougher on fences than anything inland. Here is how each material handles life in St. Clair Shores.

Canal Favorite

Ornamental Aluminum

Powder-Coated Black or Bronze

Aluminum will not rust in damp lake air, lets wind pass through and keeps the view of the canal or lake open. It is also our standard pool and dock-side barrier.

Heights:

3ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black or bronze

Gates:

Self-closing available

Best For:

Waterfront, views

Wind passes straight through

Moisture-Proof Privacy

Vinyl Fencing

Virgin PVC, Reinforced

Vinyl will not rot in wet ground near the lake. On exposed lots we specify reinforced rails and steel-stiffened gate posts to stand up to wind load.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Colors:

White, Tan, Woodgrain

Rails:

Aluminum reinforced

Best For:

Privacy near water

No rot, no stain

Inland Streets

Cedar Wood Fencing

Shadowbox & Dog-Ear

On the inland ranch streets, cedar privacy is a natural fit for small, close backyards. Shadowbox lets some wind through while still blocking views.

Heights:

4ft to 6ft

Wood:

Western Red Cedar

Styles:

Shadowbox, Dog-ear

Best For:

Inland privacy

Less wind load than solid

Practical

Chain Link Fencing

Black Vinyl-Coated

Coated chain link resists corrosion better than bare galvanized near the water and is the budget pick for a dog yard on an inland lot.

Heights:

4ft to 5ft

Finish:

Black vinyl-coated

Gates:

Walk and drive

Best For:

Dogs, budget

Coated for damp air

BUILDING IN ST. CLAIR SHORES

Wind, Water and Canal Setbacks

On the canals and the lakefront, the water table sits close to the surface and the ground stays soft much of the year. Posts there need deep footings to hold against both frost and wind, so we set every post 42 inches deep in concrete and use reinforced gate posts. Fences near a seawall, dock or the water's edge can face extra placement limits, and many canal owners want to keep the view, which is why open aluminum is the most common waterfront choice.

Inland, St. Clair Shores looks a lot like its Macomb neighbors: narrow lots, brick ranches, detached garages and old chain link. There the job is usually a replacement, with careful work around the neighbor's existing fence. Most Metro Detroit cities limit front-yard fences to about 3-4 feet; on waterfront lots the 'front' may face the water, so we confirm your lot's rules with the St. Clair Shores building department before quoting.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

St. Clair Shores Fence Questions

For canal, lakefront and inland homeowners.

What fence is best for a canal home in St. Clair Shores?

Powder-coated aluminum. It does not rust in damp air, lets wind pass through and keeps the water view. Vinyl is the choice if you need privacy and are not right on the water.

Do I need a permit for a fence in St. Clair Shores?

Yes, plan on one. Waterfront lots can have extra placement considerations. We confirm the rules for your address and file the permit for you.

Will a privacy fence blow over near the lake?

Not when it is built right. We set posts 42 inches deep in concrete, reinforce rails and stiffen gate posts. On very exposed lots we may suggest shadowbox or semi-privacy to reduce wind load.

Can you fence around my pool or dock area?

Yes. We build pool barriers with self-closing, self-latching gates, and fence near docks and seawalls where placement is allowed.

How much does a fence cost in St. Clair Shores?

Most residential projects land between about $25 and $60 per linear foot installed. Chain link is at the low end, aluminum and vinyl higher. The free measure gives you an exact itemized price.
