WHAT REAL PRIVACY TAKES
Four Things That Decide How Private a Fence Feels
Material gets the attention, but these details decide whether you can actually relax in the backyard.
Height Versus Sightlines
Six feet blocks a standing neighbor on flat ground. A raised deck next door or a slope can call for 8 feet where allowed, or a taller section by the patio.
Planned from your patio
No Gaps as Boards Dry
Pine boards shrink after install. We use tight board spacing, tongue-and-groove vinyl or overlapping shadowbox so gaps do not open.
Stays solid over time
Built for Wind Load
A solid 6-foot fence catches wind like a sail. Posts below the 42″ frost line in concrete keep it upright through spring storms.
Deep concrete footings
Gates That Close Tight
A gate gap is a privacy gap. Steel-stiffened gate posts keep gates square and latched for years.
No sagging gates

How Tall Should Your Privacy Fence Be?
Most Metro Detroit cities cap backyard fences at 6 feet, and some allow 8 feet along rear lot lines, next to commercial property or with a variance. Six feet hides a standing adult on level ground. If your neighbor’s yard sits higher, or they have a raised deck, 6 feet may only hide you from the shoulders down.
When 8 feet is not allowed, a few tricks help: put the patio farther from the fence, add a taller freestanding screen near seating where rules allow, or plant along the inside. We check your city’s limit and your HOA rules before quoting. For more budget ideas, see inexpensive privacy fence ideas and our privacy fence photos.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Privacy Fencing Questions
Honest answers to what people ask before they build.
What is the cheapest privacy fence?
Pressure-treated pine board-on-rail is the least expensive full-privacy fence, usually $25 to $40 per linear foot installed for 6 feet. Chain link with slats can be lower but gives partial privacy.
Wood or vinyl for a privacy fence?
Wood costs less up front and looks natural, but needs sealing every few years. Vinyl costs more but needs only rinsing. Over 15 years, the totals often end up close.
Can I build an 8-foot privacy fence?
Sometimes. Many Metro Detroit cities cap residential backyard fences at 6 feet but allow 8 feet in specific situations or by variance. We check your city’s rules before quoting.
Which side of a privacy fence faces the neighbor?
Many cities require the finished side to face outward. Shadowbox and vinyl look finished on both sides, which avoids the question.
How do you keep a privacy fence from blowing over?
Set posts below the 42-inch frost line in concrete, use the right post spacing, and consider shadowbox or a lattice top on very exposed runs to reduce wind load.
How long does a privacy fence last?
Pine runs about 10 to 15 years, cedar 15 to 25, and vinyl 20 to 30, assuming posts are set below frost.
