WHAT A POOL BARRIER MUST DO
Four Things Every Inspector Checks
Michigan communities enforce pool barriers through the state residential code and local ordinances based on the same model rules. These are the points that pass or fail a final inspection.
Height of 48 Inches or More
The barrier must be at least 48 inches tall measured on the side away from the pool, with a small gap at grade so a child cannot crawl under.
Measured from outside grade
No Gaps a Child Fits Through
Openings must not pass a 4-inch sphere, and horizontal rails spaced closer than 45 inches must be on the pool side so they cannot be used as a ladder.
Non-climbable by design
Gates That Close Themselves
Pedestrian gates must open outward, away from the pool, and be self-closing and self-latching, with the latch release mounted high or shielded.
Tested before we leave
Permit and Final Inspection
Pool barriers are inspected. We file the fence permit, confirm any local additions to the code and build to pass the first time.

POOL FENCE OPTIONS
Choose Your Pool Barrier
Most pool owners pick a permanent aluminum fence, a removable mesh barrier, or both. Every option needs a code-compliant gate.
Most Popular
Aluminum Pool Safety Fencing
Permanent, Pool-Rated Panels
Powder-coated aluminum with tight picket spacing and pool-side rail layout. Will not rust from splash-out or chlorine and keeps the pool visible.
Heights:
4ft, 5ft
Picket Gap:
Under 4″
Finish:
Black powder coat
Best For:
Permanent barriers
Rust-free around chlorine
See-Through
Removable Mesh Pool Barriers
Tensioned Mesh on Deck Sleeves
Transparent mesh panels on poles that drop into sleeves cored into the deck. Nearly invisible, and they lift out for parties or winter covers.
Heights:
4ft, 5ft
Mounting:
Cored deck sleeves
Removal:
No tools needed
Best For:
Inner child barrier
Pool-side layer of protection
Required
Self-Closing Pool Safety Gates
Outswing, Self-Latching
Gates hung to swing away from the pool on self-closing hinges, with a magnetic latch mounted high enough that small children cannot reach it.
Swing:
Outward from pool
Hinges:
Self-closing, adjustable
Latch:
Magnetic, high mount
Best For:
Every pool barrier
Closes and latches every time
CHOOSING A MATERIAL
Aluminum, Vinyl or Mesh Around Your Pool?
Aluminum is the most common pool fence we build because it does not rust, it keeps the pool in view from the house and pool-rated panels are designed around the barrier rules. Vinyl pool fencing works when you also want backyard privacy, as long as the style has no climbable horizontal rails on the outside. Standard chain link is usually not accepted because its 2-inch diamonds act as footholds.
Removable mesh is best as a second, inner barrier right at the water's edge, especially for families with toddlers, while a permanent fence secures the yard. Whatever the material, the gate is where most inspections fail, so we set gate posts 42 inches deep in concrete to keep the latch aligned year after year. Our pool fence building guide explains the rules in more detail.

HOW A POOL FENCE GETS BUILT
Coordinated With Your Pool Build
Most pool barriers go in after the deck is poured and before final inspection. We work with your pool builder's schedule.
01
Step 1
Measure & Code Review
We measure the layout, check grade along the barrier, note doors and windows that open toward the pool and confirm the local barrier rules before quoting.
Barrier layout drawn
Local rules confirmed
Itemized written quote

02
Step 2
Permit & Miss Dig
We file the fence permit with the plot plan, coordinate with the pool contractor's timeline and call in Miss Dig so utilities and pool lines are not damaged.

Pool builder coordinated
Utilities marked first

Step 3
Build, Test & Walkthrough
Posts go in at 42 inches in concrete or core-drilled into the deck, panels and gates are installed, and we test that every gate closes and latches from any open position.

Gates tested from full open

POOL SAFETY DETAILS
Details That Make a Pool Barrier Safer
Code is the minimum. These details close the gaps families actually run into.
Keep Climb Aids Away
Planters, AC units, benches and pool equipment placed near the outside of the fence can defeat a 48-inch barrier. We plan the layout around them.
House Walls as Barrier
If the house forms one side, doors leading to the pool typically need alarms or self-closing hardware. We flag this at the measure.
Layered Protection
A yard fence plus removable mesh at the water's edge gives two barriers between a toddler and the pool.
Annual Gate Check
Hinges lose tension over time. Open the gate fully every spring and confirm it closes and latches on its own.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Pool Fence Questions Michigan Homeowners Ask
Height, gates, materials and inspections.
How tall does a pool fence need to be in Michigan?
At least 48 inches measured on the outside, under the residential code most Michigan communities enforce. Some cities have additional rules, so we confirm with the local building department before ordering.
Does a pool fence gate have to be self-closing?
Yes. Pedestrian gates must open away from the pool and be self-closing and self-latching. The latch release generally must be at least 54 inches above grade or on the pool side near the top of the gate.
Can I use chain link as a pool fence?
Standard 2-inch mesh usually is not accepted because children can climb it. Smaller mesh may be allowed in some communities. Aluminum or a vinyl style with no outside rails is the safer choice.
How much does pool fencing cost?
Most inground pool barriers in aluminum land roughly between $40 and $65 per linear foot installed, with self-closing gates priced separately. Mesh barriers are priced by the foot plus deck sleeves.
Do I need a separate permit for the pool fence?
Many communities issue the fence permit separately from the pool permit, and the pool cannot pass final without the barrier. We file the fence permit for you.
Is a removable mesh fence enough on its own?
In some communities a compliant mesh barrier with a self-closing gate can serve as the barrier, but many families use it as an inner layer inside a permanent yard fence. We check what your inspector will accept.
