Inspection Ready

Pool Fencing and Self-Closing Gates, Metro Detroit

A pool barrier passes or fails at the gate. We build 48-inch-plus pool fences with gates that swing out from the pool, close on their own from any open position and latch every time, then we file the permit and get you ready for final inspection.

WHAT INSPECTORS CHECK

Four Things Every Pool Barrier Has to Get Right

BOCA was the older national code many Michigan towns once used. Today most building departments enforce pool barrier rules drawn from the International codes. The core requirements are consistent.

Height of 48 Inches or More

The barrier must be at least 48 inches tall, measured on the side away from the pool. Grade that drops at the fence line can quietly cut that number, so we measure the outside.

Measured from outside grade

No Climbable Gaps

Openings in the fence must be small enough that a 4-inch sphere cannot pass, and the space under the bottom rail must stay tight to grade. Horizontal rails go on the pool side.

4″ sphere rule

Gates Open Outward

Pedestrian gates must swing away from the pool so a child pushing on a gate that failed to latch cannot walk straight through toward the water.

Swing direction checked

Self-Closing, Self-Latching

Gates must close and latch on their own from any open position. Latch release height rules are strict, so we mount hardware where your inspector expects it.

GATE HARDWARE & LATCH HEIGHT

Why Pool Gates Fail Inspection, and How We Avoid It

Most failed pool inspections come down to the gate: hinges that close too weakly to overcome the latch, a latch mounted too low, or a gate that sagged since it was hung. Under the codes most departments follow, the latch release generally must be at least 54 inches above grade. If it is lower, it typically has to be on the pool side, several inches below the top of the gate, with no opening near it a child could reach through. Your building department has the final word, so we confirm before we build.

We hang pool gates on tension-adjustable self-closing hinges, use magnetic top-pull latches that catch without slamming, and set gate posts below the 42-inch frost line so the latch stays aligned through Michigan winters. Most of our pool barriers are powder-coated aluminum; vinyl pool fencing and a removable mesh inner barrier are options too. See the full pool fencing range.

HOW A POOL FENCE PROJECT RUNS

From Plot Plan to Final Inspection

Pool barriers almost always need a permit and a final inspection. Plan the fence before the pool is filled so the inspector can sign off on schedule.

01

Step 1

Measure & Barrier Plan

We walk the yard, mark every access point including house doors that open toward the pool, and design a barrier line and gate layout that meets your building department's rules.

Grade measured outside the line

02

Step 2

Permit, HOA & Miss Dig

We draw the plot plan, file the permit, submit any HOA packet and place the Miss Dig 811 ticket. Pool contractors' schedules are coordinated so the barrier is ready on time.

03

Step 3

Build, Tune & Inspect

Posts go in at 42 inches in concrete, panels and gates are hung, hinges are tuned so each gate closes and latches from full open, and we help schedule the final inspection.

BARRIER OPTIONS

Pool Fence Materials and Gate Choices

Any material can make a compliant pool barrier if it is built to the rules. These are the ones homeowners pick most.

Ornamental Aluminum

The most common pool barrier. Pickets spaced under 4 inches, no rust, open view of the water, and gates that hold adjustment well.

Vinyl Privacy

Blocks neighbors' views of the pool. Smooth faces with rails on the pool side give children nothing to climb.

Wood Privacy

Cedar privacy works if rails and backers face the pool and gaps stay tight. Wood gates need steel-stiffened posts to stay latched.

Removable Mesh Inner Layer

A see-through second barrier between the house and the water, removable for parties and winter.

Walk Gates, 4 to 5 Feet

Wide enough for pool equipment and chairs, light enough to self-close reliably. Wider gates need stronger hinges.

Gate Alarms & Locks

Keyed latches and gate alarms add a layer. Doors from the house into the pool area may need alarms; we flag that during the plan.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Pool Fence and Gate Questions

What Metro Detroit homeowners ask before the pool goes in.

How tall does a pool fence need to be in Michigan?

Most Michigan building departments require at least 48 inches, measured on the side away from the pool, based on the International codes. Some cities have additional rules. We confirm with your city or township before quoting.

Which way should a pool gate swing?

Away from the pool. If a gate fails to latch, a child pushing on it should be pushing it closed, not walking through into the pool area.

How high does a pool gate latch have to be?

Under the codes most departments use, the latch release is generally at least 54 inches above grade. A lower release is usually allowed only on the pool side, near the top of the gate, with no openings nearby. Confirm the exact requirement with your local building department.

Does an above-ground pool need a fence?

Often the pool wall can count as the barrier if it is at least 48 inches tall and the ladder can be removed or locked. Decks and steps change that. Ask your building department, and we can fence the access point if needed.

How much does pool fencing with a self-closing gate cost?

Most 4- to 5-foot aluminum pool fence projects land between about $35 and $60 per linear foot installed, with self-closing walk gates often $500 to $1,200 each depending on width and hardware. You get an itemized quote after the measure.

What does BOCA-compliant pool fencing mean today?

BOCA was a regional building code once used in Michigan. It has been replaced by the International codes, which carry similar barrier rules. When people ask for BOCA-compliant, they mean a barrier that passes current local inspection.
